Camp Report: Junior 1, June 18-23, 2023

by Tammy Duvanel Unruh

June 26, 2023

It was an action-packed week for the campers and staff Junior Camp 1, held June 18-23. Program Directors Jill and Adam Robb were at the helm for what to date has been the largest week of the summer with 58 campers along with the nurse, counselors, cooks, and staff members needed to make sure a good time was had by all.

Campers came from a variety of places to spend a week on the river. Newton and the surrounding community was well represented, of course, but a few, less common to Camp Mennoscah but still in Kansas locales included Lawrence, Netawaka, and Matfield Green. Kids from out of state included those from Winnetka, IL: Austin, TX; Normal, IL; Henderson, NE; Hebron, NE; Laramie, WY; and Riverside, CA.

Juniors are campers that are going into grades 6 and 7 in the fall. This is a full week of going strong with all kinds of activities, including crafts, swimming, River Play, a hayride, worship and singing, evening campfires, and, of course, food!  When asked what the best part of the week was, camper Uriah from Laramie answered, with much enthusiasm, “The food. Gotta be the food.” RIver Play and swimming were also mentioned as favorite activities, but the most common answer to all queries as to the best part of the week were “All of it,” or “I can’t pick just one.” Even when pushed, campers found it difficult to name any one thing that was truly outstanding because it all was great.

A unique feature of the camp week was a trip to the storm shelter early one morning in response to a storm with a lot of lightning. All was well, but all were glad to have the Retreat Center basement in which to shelter until the all clear was sounded. A few of the campers, seemingly and especially the boys, found finding shoes in the dark a little tricky. If you get the chance to ask, you’ll probably get a story.

Glad to have had you, Junior 1. See you next year!!
